What is Oblique House?
Oblique House
is name of the palatial 200-square foot office in which scriptwriters
John Pellatt and Kenn Scott toil at their chosen trade, often late into the
night after all right-thinking people have gone to bed. Since founding
Oblique House in 1997, Kenn and John have sold (collectively or individually) more than 70 animated and live-action
television scripts , and they have also managed to grab about 8
hours of sleep (cumulative grand total) in the process. Their work
has been seen in the US on CBS, Fox, The WB, PBS, Nickelodeon and
Fox Family; in Canada on the CBC, CTV, Teletoon, YTV, TVO, Family Channel
and The Comedy Network; in the UK on BBC, ITV, and Channel 4; and in
over 65 other countries on dozens and dozens of networks, satellite systems
and illegal cable hookups.
Despite all of
the foregoing, many people still feel the most interesting thing about
Oblique House is that is not in fact a house; it is a
rectangular office in an office building. As well, the walls
of Oblique House meet each other at angles of exactly 90 degrees,
which means there are no oblique angles within the structure of Oblique
House. Oh, the irony.
John Pellatt
Although born
and raised in Canada, John Pellatt broke into the radio and television
business in the UK in the 1980s, initially writing sketches for
various BBC and ITV programmes. Upon returning to Canada, he was one
of the founding members of the Toronto radio station CIUT-FM , where he worked in both on-air and
production capacties for the next several years. He also continued
to write for television, and picked up a Gemini nomination for best
comedy/variety writing for his work on the 1988 Genie telecast.
In 1989, John
joined the comedy troupe Trouser Park, which broadcast over 400
sketches on CBC Radio, as well as appearing on CITY TV and Vision TV.
Trouser Park was also heard on US radio, via syndication. The troupe
disbanded in 1996.
Then, beginning in
1997, John teamed up with Kenn Scott to form Oblique House, and has
kept himself busy writing for television ever since. He continues his
interest in audio, however: current non-TV projects include the
production of an audiobook featuring short stories written and read by the
award-winning science fiction author Robert
J. Sawyer . As well, Trouser Park unexpectedly reformed in
2003 and they can once again be heard semi-frequently on CBC Radio.
Kenn Scott
It all started
at a small 500-watt radio station in Fresno, California....
Actually, it
all started at the 15,000-watt CIUT-FM
at the University of Toronto. It was there that Kenn Scott somehow bluffed
his way into becoming one of the station's morning newscasters in the early
90s. Soon thereafter, Kenn found himself writing and performing
literally hundreds of newscasts and commercials, as well as writing,
producing and performing his own weekly sketch-comedy programme. From
there, it was on to earning a degree in Radio and Television Arts at
Toronto's Ryerson University,
where Kenn specialized in scriptwriting and in earning an embarrassing number
of cheesy student awards. Fortunately, some of these awards actually had a
cash value and helped to pay off Kenn's substantial student loans.
Beginning in
1997, Kenn teamed up with John Pellatt (whom he had first met at CIUT) and
embarked upon a career writing television scripts. Together as a team, Kenn
and John have been nominated for a Gemini Award (best writing in a
children's or youth programme), and won the 1999 Writers' Guild of
Canada Award for their animation writing.
Kenn has also sold a number of solo scripts, and most recently
nabbed a solo Writers’ Guild of Canada Award nomination for his work on the
show Henry’s World.
Kenn's
favourite hobby is writing five-word sentences that Americans will think
contain three misspellings. His favourite colour is grey.
